Ohio River Cabins
These cabins located along the Ohio River in Derby and Cannelton, Indiana, offer relaxing places to stay and play.
Located on an arc of the Ohio River that meanders southwest towards the Wabash River, along a shoreline dotted with quaint river towns that have held onto the charms of their past, Ohio River Cabins offers places to stay and play.
Seekers of lands seemingly forgotten will find the caves, hills, creeks and woods of this part of southwest Indiana invite exploration on foot or by kayak. But there is also faster action, as the broad and slow-moving Ohio is the place for boating, fishing, personal watercrafts, water skiing and tubing.
No matter your idea of fun — and some of us do like reading a book and enjoying the view surrounded by nature — the 10 rustic and comfy Ohio River Cabins are perched on high points above the water between Cannelton (an old mill town settled in 1837) and Derby (population 381). Both are stops along the 981-mile Ohio River Scenic Byway, a designated National Scenic Byway that follows the water through six states. For a real feel of the past, book a stay at Utopia, an 1849 log cabin on Oil Creek.
Connect to your inner German at Winzerwald Winery in Bristow with its tasting room and outdoor patio overlooking the vineyard. Wein Kitchen Restaurant features food-and-wine pairings, charcuterie and Bavarian pretzels, while Blue Heron Winery near Cannelton hosts Wine Over Water concerts that continue into fall. Founded in 1858, Tell City Pretzels in Tell City, another town along the Ohio River, continues to make hand-twisted pretzels according to its original (and secret) recipe.
No matter where you wander during the day, when evening sets in, you can always kick back on the porch of your cabin and watch the lights of the boats passing by on the river.
