MacGregor Point Provincial Park

Family camping in winter? It’s not only doable, but fun when you’re staying in a yurt at MacGregor Point Provincial Park. Situated along the shores of Lake Huron in Port Elgin, Ontario, this park has seven of these large, tent-like structures equipped with bunk beds, table and chairs, heating and even an electrical outlet. Outside the 16-foot-tall yurt, there’s a fire pit, picnic table and propane grill, with restrooms and showers nearby. 

It’s a surprisingly warm and comfortable way to enjoy all the winter activities this Canadian park offers. Skate the 1,300-foot loop that winds through the mixed hardwood and evergreen forest, which is especially magical at night with its twinkling lights. 

Activities include snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on groomed trails, including the Old Shore Trail, which offers scenic views of the frozen shoreline, and the Deer Run Trail, which connects to the Tomsett Trail via the track-set Ski Trail.

Birdwatchers flock to the park as it lies along a migratory route used by more than 200 species each spring and fall. But winter has its own feathered residents, including cardinals, blue jays and the not-at-all shy chickadees, who will cheerfully feed from your hand.

Because of their affordability and stellar location, yurts book quickly. Reserve up to five months in advance of your arrival date. Be aware that you’ll need to bring your own bedding, cooking utensils and dishes.
