The Paranormal Roadtripper’s Nightmare Gallery

From a purported elixir of eternal youth from the Czech Republic to Moroccan artwork related to genies of Arabian folklore and Islamic theology, there is always something unusual, and otherworldly to see at the Paranormal Roadtripper’s Nightmare Gallery in Somerset, Kentucky. 

“These so-called haunted objects are truly unique with fascinating histories and mysteries,” remarks museum owner Zach Bales, and his collection is always growing. The author of six books, including The Paranormal Passport of South-Central Kentucky and The Amateur’s Guide to Ghost Hunting, Bales has amassed curiosities from behemoth Bigfoot silhouettes to life-size mannequins of horror-movie icons like Michael Myers of “Halloween” fame. These treasures — some of which are available for purchase — are presented in beautiful wooden cabinets that Bales built himself. 

Every time the irrepressible adventurer visits a new destination, he brings back a piece of that place’s folklore, such as the elixir of eternal youth. One of Bales’ favorite pieces, the elixir was said to have been created using a formula found in a centuries-old alchemy lab that had been recently discovered.

Eye-catching maps and displays — all designed by Bales himself — share the legends and lore of ghosts, monsters and aliens Bales takes visitors on intriguing and unforgettable journeys into the unknown and unexplained. 

The 30- to 40-minute tours are available by appointment and tailored to visitors’ interests, including highlighting folklore from the areas they hail from when possible. As the guided tour concludes, visitors may explore more on their own and browse the gift shop.
